DuPont Performance Elastomers, DuPont Develop Laminates for Extremely Low Fuel Permeation Hoses

F-200 barrier laminates for extremely low fuel permeation hoses allow automotive customers to meet or exceed California Air Resources Board (CARB) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel emission requirements.

DuPont Performance Elastomers and DuPont have joined together to develop F-200 barrier laminates for extremely low fuel permeation hoses. Not only do the hoses have the flexibility of traditional rubber for complex shapes and easy installation, they allow customers to meet or exceed California Air Resources Board (CARB) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel emission requirements.

The F-200 barrier laminates offer excellent fuel permeation rates even for alternative fuels containing ethanol, methanol and MTBE. F-200 fuel permeation rates for most fuels are approximately 10 times better than fluoroelastomer-veneered hoses and 500 to 1,000 times better than a nitrile rubber construction.

Temperature resistance from -40°C to 150°C

The product couples like a traditional rubber hose and can be made in straight lengths or formed shapes. F-200 barrier laminate offers heat resistance up to 150°C and passes low-temperature mandrel bend testing at minus 40°C.

The laminate consists of an inner layer of Viton® fluoroelastomer that adheres to and protects a thin film of DuPont™ Teflon® FEP. An electrostatically conductive veneer of Viton® can be applied for applications requiring electrostatic dissipation. The hose can be covered with a tie layer of DuPont™ Vamac® ethylene/acrylic elastomer. To give it even greater strength and durability, it can be reinforced with DuPont™ Kevlar® aramid fibers.

Because of its rubber-like flexibility, the F-200 barrier hose can be coupled with a wide variety of hose clamps and fittings. Its flexibility also contributes to ease of routing and allows for direct substitution into existing designs.

Automotive applications include: fuel filler neck hoses; fuel interconnect hoses, and vent hoses and tubing. Non-automotive applications are: off-highway manufacturers; small engine manufacturers, and marine.
